The history of the company dates back to far 1919, during the First World War. The young British Lieutenant Ernest Tribe, in conjunction with Dr. Henry Hele-Shaw, a noted English hydraulic engineer, came up with the concept of quick release mechanical bolt coupling, which had a significant effect on speed up of the deployment of fuel and water lines of the British Government during battle.
On 4 April 1919, Lieutenant Tribe filed the patent for what is now known as the Victaulic coupling.
My invention is for an improved pipe joint which obviates the necessity for raising flanges at the ends of the pipes to be joined, which will significantly accelerate installation of one unit of a pipe structure. An essential feature of my invention is a packing ring, the shape of which ensures the durability and strength of the entire structure.
Patent application No. 14938 was accepted on April 4, 1919
Shortly thereafter, the Victory Pipe Joint Co. was established in London and a second patent was filed in both names.
Dr. Hele-Shaw had numerous inventions including the multiple-plate clutch, stream-line filter, variable-pitch propeller, and Victaulic pipe joint. Later, in 1922, the words "Victory" and "Hydraulics” were combined and shortened to form a single word, Victaulic. Subsequently, Victaulic Company of America was founded in New York City in February 1925.
The original purpose of the Victaulic pipe joint was mainly for military applications but quickly gained popularity in other commercial and industrial markets.
Victaulic is a global company with 15 major manufacturing facilities, 28 branches, and over 4000 employees worldwide. Annually, the Company invests the vast sums of money in innovations and new inventions in the field of pipe products, which subsequently resulted in more than 2000 patents of the Company as of today. Currently, Victaulic headquarters is located in Easton, PA. John F. Malloy has been serving as CEO since 2002.
Victaulic mechanical couplings are used in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and mining, water and waste water treatment, oilfield operations, power plants, military, marine systems and other industrial applications
A roll grooving technique or a cut grooving technique is used for grooved (quick release, mechanical) couplings to join pipes and pipe joining components. A gasket wraps around and on top of the pipe ends, the housings wrap around the gasket and sit in the pipe grooves, and the bolts and nuts are tightened with a wrench to hold it all together. "The economics of the grooved method derive from simplified assembly that involves three basic concepts: a pressure responsive gasket that creates a leak-tight seal; couplings that hold the pipe together; and fasteners that secure the couplings
